Community Youth Advance Mentor Application
Thank you for being interested in mentoring with Community Youth Advance.
CY Advance mentors work with middle and high school students in the Prince George’s County and the Washington, DC metro to provide the skills and experiences they need to complete college and excel in the workforce.
Please complete this application if you’re interested in mentoring with CY Advance. Volunteers who meet the mentoring requirements will be invited to meet with one of our staff members and be required to complete the routine volunteer clearance background check. For the safety and security of our students, background checks must be renewed every two years.
Please note that due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic, CY Advance has suspended in-person interviews until further notice. Introductions and meetings will be conducted virtually.

Thank you for your application to become a Mentor with Community Youth Advance! Now that you have completed the first step, here is what you can expect:
- A member of the Community Youth Advance Mentoring Team will reach out to you within the week to discuss your interests and next steps.
- You will be required to complete a background check and the Prince George's County Safe Schools courses.
- Mentors selecting our Brookland Middle School programs will also need to complete DCPS fingerprinting and TB testing (there is no charge for these additional background check requirements)
- You will be required to review and sign the acknowledgement of CYA’s policies regarding confidentiality, inappropriate relationships and safety found in the CYA Employee Handbook. This will be provided to you upon completion of your background check.
- You will be required to participate in a mandatory onboarding and mentor training. This will be scheduled for you by the mentoring team upon the completion of your background check.

Background Checks:
Background Checks are conducted by our partners at Hughes Barney Investigations. Please contact them to schedule an appointment. CYA subsidizes part of the cost for mentor background checks. A member of the CYA Mentoring Program will provide a mentor background check form to take with you to your appointment.
Background check fee: $25.00
(Mentors in our Brookland Middle School Programs will also be required to complete DCPS fingerprinting and TB testing. There is no charge for these additional background check requirements and a member of the mentoring team will provide you with additional information on how to schedule and complete these steps.)

Safe Schools Training
You can register for and begin your Safe Schools Training today. Each module typically takes about 30 minutes to complete. Once completed, please download your certificate and email it to the CYA mentoring team at [email protected] with the subject line “Mentor Safe Schools Completion”
